“edges”? Submitted by GianniVacca on Tue, 12/06/2012 – 15:45
I have just purchased a used copy of Anaxial’s Roster. Creature descriptions often feature keywords preceded by the ^ symbol. The introduction says it’s an “edge”.
What is it?

OK… So I reckon I can

OK… So I reckon I can ignore them. Or slightly raise the value of the corresponding keyword.
Ignore them completely. Edges

Ignore them completely. Edges were a poorly-conceived and broken-from-the-start mechanic that was slapped onto the HW rules as an afterthought by people who didn’t really understand the rules.
BTW, once the Guide is finished I will be commissioning art for the NEW Gloranthan Bestiary by Pete Nash. And it is awesome!

If it helps…

Extended contests worked differently in Hero Wars, luckily it’s much simpler now.

“Edge: A type of enhancement added to an action point bid if the opponent must forfeit or transfer APs. See also handicap.”
“Action Point (AP) Bid: The number of action points that an actor “wagers” at during an exchange. Depending on die results, the action point bid may be forfeited, transferred, or have no effect.”

A now obsolete rule for HQ

A now obsolete rule for HQ 1’s extended resolution system.
Lost your Edge ?

Ah, the glory days of HQ 1… when getting a “detailed contest” done took over one hour because it was so damn complicated… Edges were part of that. It was a honesty try to make matters more interested and colorful, but ultimately, it was useless.
The point was to arbitrate situations where an opponent had low skill but any victory from his part could have huge consequences. Ex : Brontosaur Tail Lash 15 / Edge 20. IT had a hard time to hit you, buf it did connect, you were pizza.
You can (should) add the Edge to the creature’s relevant score. And stop reading the monster manual – you’ll spoil your fun.
spoilt fun

Thanks Hervé for the reply.
The parts I like in Anaxial’s Roster are the small bits of legends and lore. The stats are secondary… The edge symbol just piqued my curiosity.
Not spoiled fun !

My favorite story in Anaxial’s roster is “How cat tamed people”. I used to tell it to my children as a bedtime story, many (twelve) years ago. You should love the future “Monster Manual”, written as a story by a second-age godlearner zoologist who inadvertly takes part in many historical events such as the raising of the faceless statue by Pavis. It’s going to be subjective, incomplete and full of errors : just the way I like it !
