AH8573 Monster Coliseum (Box 1 – 1985)

Artist, Lisa Free

Arena Combat & Chariot Racing for RuneQuest

As the beast launches himself at the seemingly-easy target, lightly-armored Tallia nimbly dodges his razor- sharp claws and drives her spear deep into Bloodfeather’s chest. Leaping upon his back, she rides the wildly-thrashing creature until he falls, exhausted and bleeding. Tallia slowly rises from the dust of the arena, staggering once as the crowd erupts into cheers. Tallia glances toward the governor of the games, who points his thumb to the ground. Bloodfeather, the Griffin who killed the last eight opponents that stood against him, is doomed.

Usually the flying assault of a griffin is too swift to counter, but Tallia is an essedaria- trained in the use of spear. Derived from Roman examples, Monster Coliseum adapts gladiatorial types and coliseum combat procedures to the RuneQuest® rules, explains coliseum construction methods, describes pre-game ceremony, and instances types of combats.

Chariot rules include occupational experience tables for charioteers, chariot design procedures, and sample historical chariots- add the thrill of chariot racing to campaigns and recreate classic matches from history or fiction. Players lacking fellow gamers can use the Solo Adventuring instructions to pit adventurers against any of the 180 fully-prepared opponents in the Monster Book or in any other RuneQuest scenario.

Monster Coliseum includes:

  • Monster Book- human soldiers & gladiators, non-human & master gladiators, natural animals, supernatural monsters, encounters on-the-road.
  • Coliseum Book- coliseum description, arena diagram, net-use rules, charioteer occupations, chariot design, race rules, sample historical chariots, solo adventuring instructions.
  • Play Aids- coliseum floorplan, rangestick, racetrack sections, chariot and team markers, gamemaster aids, player aids.
