HeroQuest 1 – Template: Animist Practice

 Last revision: 2 Apr 2004

Animist Practice Magic Keyword

Name
Rune

A description of the majestic spirit and common knowledge of the practice is followed by the actual keyword. A hero receives all keyword abilities if he takes the magic keyword during character creation, but does not automatically gain all of them if he joins the practice during play.

Entry Requirements:Specific requirements for the character to join the practice and take the keyword. These might include gender, occupation, culture, or family restrictions, or even specific abilities and ratings.
Religion or Homeland:The tradition of which the practice is a part, or the homeland in which it is found.
Abilities:Typical things that a person can do when they have been in this practice. A hero can select some of these to specialize in, thereby setting himself apart from the normal membership.
Depending on the keyword, different levels of membership or different types of members may have different abilities available. Most animist practices include at least the following abilities:
Follower of [Majestic Spirit], [Majestic Spirit] Practice Knowledge, Spirit Face.
Virtues:Desired personality traits of worshippers. A hero may take any, all, or none of these as abilities.
Practice Spirits:The specific spirits available to practitioners, with typical abilities and ability ratings.
Spirit Ally:Availability of, or restrictions on taking, a spirit ally. Some practices restrice taking a spirit ally to certain members or specific spirits, others limit the number of spirit allies or do not allow them at all.
Secret:The secret that practitioners, shamans, or both can eventually learn from the practice, along with suggested game mechanics for direct use of the secret.
Practice Secret Requirements:The specific abilities and ratings required to be able to learn the secret, usually three abilities with a rating of 1W2 each.
Charms and Fetishes:The items used to hold spirits. These may be natural objects or items crafted by the practitioner.
Other Side:The Otherworld home of the majestic spirit. Worshippers usually travel there during holy day ceremonies.
Disadvantages:Unusual restrictions faced by worshippers.
