Maps and Legends

Submitted by Rick on Wed, 05/09/2012 – 14:53

I have just purchased the latest iPad. Not so much because of my love for gadgetry and Apple products in general, but because we are in the process of planning an interactive Gloranthan Atlas that will work on an iPad and other similar platforms. Bear with me as I wade into rather unfamiliar waters. The goal of the project is to best support the wonderful paper maps we are creating electronically for the forthcoming Guide to Glorantha. While I readily admit that I love poring over paper maps as much as most “old school” gamers, the notion of zooming in for more details, clicking on cities to get additional info, turning on and off various informational layers, and using other similar interactivity is too tempting to ignore.

Right now we are in the initial “reasearch” phase of the project. As part of that, we are assembling a team of experts who have knowledge of such things as iPad apps, mapping software, interactivity, and similar. If you read that last sentence and feel we have just described you, and you would like to volunteer to help us out, please contact me.

A few points for greater clarity. We are not seeking software testers, debuggers, playtesters, reviewers, editors, or similar at this time. The need for those sorts of things will come later…

I hope you’ll consider publishing animated maps that show things like Imperial expansion, major militairy campaigns and such.

For me the single greatest benefit of having electronic maps is being able to better handle changes over time.

For example, the settlement of Dragon Pass over time and the changes in the tribe of Sartar, the fall of Tarsh, the encroachment of the Lunar Empire, all or parts of that would make a great animated map.

Quote: “iPad and other similar platforms”.

Does that mean iPad, iPod, iPhone or Mac, PC, Android?

The Guide has maps and information on Balazar and the Elder Wilds. The maps for the area are very detailed.

Can’t wait to see the new maps! Balazar & the Elder Wilds won’t happen to be covered in the new doc will they?

Awaiting the Guide to Glorantha with bated breath!

Ideally we will support as many platforms as we can. Having a version that can be used on a PC or a Mac is towards the top of that list.

Great idea. I hope I will be able to use it on my mac as I don’t plan to purchase an Ipad or other tablet.

I have to ask, will you do and Android tablet or PC version?
