Someone recently asked me what my favorite cults are to actually play. You know for player characters in actual campaigns (rather than as NPCs or to speculate about in internet discussions). Here are my three favorites (in no particular order):
Orlanth. The protagonist cult in any campaign against the Lunar Empire (or Chaos for that matter). Orlanth is pretty much tailor made to play heroic adventurers who get in and out of trouble, have excitement, and do things their way. The god of heroes covers a wide range of play styles from Conan to Odysseus and Heracles.
Humakt. Who doesn’t want to be the Bronze Age equivalent of a mercenary gunslinger? Blue-eyed Samurai, the Man with No Name, and Lone Wolf, with a bit of Achilles and Cu Chulainn with the geases and gifts thrown in. You get to play a killer who is not destined for a long life.
Lhankor Mhy. Sometimes I want to play a Call of Cthulhu investigator in my fantasy game. A real one – with library use, books, spells for gaining knowledge, and pretty much useless in combat. But then again I love having lores, finding old scrolls, and being the “expert” on what the party is going to investigate.
