I particularly love this map of Old Sartar, showing most of the Orlanthi clans around the Quivin Mountains.
One thing that I find neat is in a glance you can get a good feel for how many clans there are. If you overlay this with where the temples to various minor gods are (which is in the forthcoming Dragon Pass guide), you quickly can get a feeling for which clans might have more members of a minor cult, and which probably don’t.
Now remember that the various cities are big population spikes. Jonstown, Swenstown, and Wilmskirk each have more populations than any given clan, and Boldhome has more population than most any ten clans put together. There are no are no major clans that ONLY reside in the cities of course. Instead, some clans have most of their population in a given city, but still have lands outside the city (e.g., Greenhaft, Black Rock, Farling, Danstarl, etc.).
Big clan territories do not usually mean big populations – more likely it means that the clan claims lots of grasslands, woods, or wild lands.
Another thing it does is show how the clans are not really autonomous enclaves. Of course you know people from other clans – you can’t help it. That’s where marriage partners come from, significant temples and markets are often meeting places for several clans, and there are many clans present in each city.
I play it that on a successful Homeland (Sartar) Lore you know key details about any clan (who the chief is, the clan’s claim to fame, any important feuds, etc.). I am sure there are plenty of people who can rattle off the names of every clan in Old Sartar (although I certainly can’t).
Given that the average clan has about 900 members, each clan is about the size of the average US high school. Some are bigger, some are smaller. But all are small enough that most members know most of the other members. And since members regularly gather for sacrifices and other activities, that just gets reinforced.
How populated is Sartar compared to other countries like Esrolia, Peloria and Prax? Sartar and Esrolia are about the same size, while Prax alone is more than four times the size of Sartar. And the Wastelands are probably around four times the size of Prax (if memory serves me well).
So by that measure, Esrolia is more than ten times as densely populated as Sartar, and Prax and the Wastelands are less than a fourth as populated as Sartar. See:
