Lunar Deities

Posted on July 14, 2022

Here is another Work in Progress by Katrin Dirim – this shows the relationship of various Lunar deities. A few surprises here to the uninitiated perhaps, and lots of secret details for the clear-eyed!

Artist, Katrin Dirim

Technical query: although she’s his First Inspiration (shown alongside his daughters YA, HE & JE), the Red Emperor isn’t Glamour’s father – he’s her husband. She is the First Inspiration of Moonson, revealed to the world by the Red Emperor. She is his creation, lauded by poets as daughter, wife, lover, and more. Note that she has no listed mother!

We had to chop off a wonderful bit showing Jar-eel’s descent from Hon-eel and then looping back to the Red Emperor. Space does impose some restrictions!

The Red Goddess claims to be Yelm’s daughter? Claims? Of course she is! And why do people say “claim”?

Is there a significance to the varying amounts of blood drops from weapons? There certainly is a lot of bloodshed going on in the Lunar religion. From the sacrifice of Teelo Norri and the connection with Gorgorma, to Yara Aranis, and Hon-eel, you might say blood sacrifice is pretty hard-wired into the religion. Oh heck, let’s not dance around it – the Lunar religion requires a lot of human sacrifice.

And some temples might look a bit more like this than like the Roman or Mesopotamian models we so love:

Issaries connection to the Red Goddess pantheon? Does that make Orlanthi family reunions a bit tense? why would it? Issaries is associated with Orlanth, with Etyries, and is NEUTRAL towards the Seven Mothers. In general Issaries is friendly towards everyone except Chaos.

But for the purposes of this thread, all that matters is that everyone all recognises that Etyries is a daughter of Issaries. What that means can be debated, but nobody doubts the association.

In RQG will there be any of the ancient moon goddess like Natha and Gerra? Gerra and Natha are names more than cults. The entities with cults are on this page.

Natha and Gerra have small cults and most Lunars believe that they were prior incarnations of the Red Goddess. Natha and Gerra are both associated with Gorgorma and the Red Goddess, and with other Lunar deities. Their autonomous cults are VERY small though.

Deezola which has pretty much subsumed Gerra. Gorgorma is also far more recognised than Gerra. Gerra is also obviously tied in with Danfive Xaron. But those cults are now far larger and more important than Gerra.

I for one am happiest actually with finally visually presenting Maize, Nightlight, and Twilight as part of the Lunar family! And visually presenting the Seven Mothers as the gateway into Lunar secrets.

Also keep in mind that the cult presented here have finally gotten official long-form write-ups for the Cults of Glorantha book and will be appearing within.
