The Pavis Road

Posted on September 11, 2024

The Pavis Road runs from Torkan’s Last Fort across Prax to New Pavis. It is the shortest direct path from Dragon Pass to New Pavis – one can do it in a little less than a week, assuming the traveler carries sufficient water and fodder.

Despite this, most Issaries caravans take the route from Swestown to Bigglestone and to the Paps and from there to New Pavis. That takes about two weeks. But why is that route preferred?

The answer is water and fodder. Caravans taking the Pavis Road need to carry all the water and fodder they need for most of the trek – there aren’t many oases, and the Adari River is dry for most of the year. That takes up at least 70% of the caravans carrying capacity.

The other route has plenty of oases and traditional stopping points. You carry enough water and fodder to get yourself to the next oases, where you can resupply. That means you can carry more goods, and you can trade with the locals at each oasis.

Logistics are the biggest problem about traveling in arid or semi-arid areas.
