The Garden, Big Rubble II

Posted on November 19, 2024

Around 750 years ago, bands of aldryami came from the Redwood Forest in Shadows Dance to the new city of Pavis and created the Garden. They planted pines, cedar, black oak, manzanitas, currants, buckbrush, ferns, succulents, fruit trees, and plenty of flowering plants of all sorts. Dryads were born here, brown and green elves tended to the trees, and runners and pixies grew in abundance.

Green Hill is the heart of the Garden. It is visible for a great distance beyond the city walls, and its green vibrancy is held in superstitious reverence by the Praxian nomads. It is covered with tall conifers.

The Garden was initially a collection of exotic plants and elven tree houses on Green Hill. When the nomads broke the walls and invaded, the Aldryami reacted by accelerating their growing program. At first, the nomads sacked the north side of the river and left the elves and their kin alone. By the time they turned their attention to the people of the trees, the entire south and east corner of the city was overgrown, and greenery extended for almost a kilometer in some directions. It was too late – the elves had built an almost impregnable stronghold.

For a while, the Garden extended across the river and covered the entire east and south walls, but the troll invasion ended that. The Men of Darkness descended on the north bank Aldryami manifestation and destroyed it. The screams of the dryads could be heard for years, even after they were long dead.

The old stone road through the Garden is walled and roofed with vines and creepers, and many guardian plants have been planted at the edges of the Garden (and presumably deeper in as well). Green elves guard the Garden, while brown elves, dryads, and runners tend to its needs. The Garden is surprisingly well-watered and lush year-round, unlike the rest of the Big Rubble.
