Tensions in the Lunar Empire

Posted on May 3, 2024

Why would initiates to Lunar gods take the side of Sartar/Argrath/Orlanth in the Hero Wars (like Fazzurs sons)? There’s a strong tension between the Lunar Heartlands and the Lunar Provinces. Until the Dragonrise/Pentan Wars, this tension was held in balance by the Lunar Army, and by the ability of Glamour to buy loyalty. But once those two things were removed (if temporarily in the case of the Lunar Army), many Provincials reevaluated their options.

Orlanth and the Seven Mothers are mutually hostile (nor enemies), but then again so are Orlanth and Pamalt, Orlanth and Yelorna, Orlanth and Zorak Zoran, and Orlanth and Magasta. We know that Zorak Zorani mercenaries have served Orlanthi leaders, especially against their mutual enemies.

A Provincial Seven Mothers group in Dragon Pass may well decide that a temporary alliance with Argrath is preferable to the continued rule of Pharandros. Once Argrath is King of Dragon Pass and ruler of Tarsh, they may reasonably decide that it is preferable to support the Red Emperor’s return to Dragon Pass. Or they may decide that the Red Emperor (and things like the Crimson Bat) is the problem and that the 7 Mothers need to work with the Lightbringers to save the world.

The real test is what happens once the Red Emperor decides to place some of these Provincial leaders under the Ban. What happens? But the answer to that is a few years off.
