Catalogue of the Gods

Posted on April 6, 2024

There are some 100+ deities recognized pretty much everywhere Glorantha. Most of these are identified on the Catalogue of the Gods. These deities might have different names in different places, but with a little cross-cultural examination (or God Learner SIght) we can pretty easily identify them. Now that’s not to say there aren’t more gods and spirits, but those are smaller or localized phenomenon.

So whenever we look at the gods known in some part of the mundane world, first figure out what deities off the Catalogue get a cult. Not every deity is gets a cult worshiped by every culture – the Sartarites have their pantheon, as does the city of Raibanth, and these are different (even though they recognize each other’s deities for the most part). Then figure out what purely local entities gets a cult there – Sartar, Raibamus, Engizi, whatever.

Then play around with names. If this is an Orlanthi land like Aggar or Solanthi, then probably the main Lightbringer and Earth gods are pretty much the same as in Dragon Pass, but if this is some far way land like Teshnos or Elamle, names might be VERY different.

Now not surprisingly, these gods are strongly identified with the universal archetypes in Glorantha – the Runes. We have a primary Air Rune deity (Orlanth), a primary Fire/Sky Rune god (Yelm), a primary Death Rune god (Humakt), and so on. These are the cults that most deeply and broadly associate with these Runes, and are thus universal in Glorantha. Mortals might have a limited and disjointed understanding of these gods, but they are real in a fundamental way.
