This sketch by Jan Pospisil depicts the noble companion of a petty king. A thane is trained to fight from horseback and usually wears short trousers of leather or wool beneath the skirt. The thane wears a bronze cuirass (like the “bell cuirass”) and a decorated bronze helmet with cheekpieces and feathered crest. The exposed throat might be covered by a crescent shaped silver-plated gorget, decorated with bands of relief ornamentation. The thane also wears bronze greaves. The thane carries a long leaf-shaped sword, an ornate round shield, and javelins for throwing.
