The Knowledge Temple, New Pavis

Posted on June 19, 2024

The Knowledge Temple in New Pavis is the largest collection of scrolls, books, parchments, etc. in all of Prax. The Knowledge Temple is the largest repository of information about Pavis and the Big Rubble in the world, and one of the largest repositories of Second Age Empire of the Wyrms Friends information. Nearly all of this information was gained by adventurers exploring and looting the Big Rubble.

It is group of buildings, each with two stories. The main building is supposed to be Y-shaped, but the left arm is unconstructed and used as an area for finishing of parchments. The right arm is used as living quarters and for training, study, and examinations – it is also the scriptorium.

The base is filled with records, copies of books and scrolls, and other storage. Upstairs are living quarters for apprentices.

Where the base joins with the right arm is the “Temple of Knowledge”. Here sages deliberate, give lectures and discussions. The Library of Originals is shelved around this, a collection of several hundred original books, scrolls, and artifacts, most found in the Big Rubble.

A separate storage building holds more copies, scrolls, records, artifacts, and the like. Incomplete scraps of information are often stored here, waiting for some scribe to complete it.

The former Irrippi Ontor Annex is now under the control of the LM cult. It contains numerous texts and items from the Lunar Empire. including many that pre-date the Red Goddess. They were brought here from the Lunar Heartlands by Sor-eel the Short and given to the library. The Lunar sage, Hetaera Thessen, was given sanctuary by the sages during the Liberation of New Pavis. She remains here, overseeing the Irrippi Ontor Annex.

The Pavis Knowledge Temple is in contact with its counterparts in Sartar, and regular loans and borrows texts from them.

The priests here style themselves as the Brotherhood of Free Sages, signaling their independence from whatever regime might control the place for the moment. The old Latish family of Sartar has dominated the temple since the early days. Its current Chief Librarian is the aggressively boring and dogmatic Gavial Latish. Varanos the Tall is the Chief Loremaster. The Provost of Apprentices is a woman from the Colymar Tribe who fled to New Pavis after Starbrow’s Rebellion.

Several scholars have come to New Pavis with Argrath. The most famous is Tosti Runefriend, who accompanied Argrath on his circumnavigation of the world, serves as Argrath’s personal advisor, and is largely above temple politics.

There are some 200 initiates of Lhankor Mhy in New Pavis, most of whom are scribes. There are another 100 initiates in the rest of Pavis County, and another 125 in Sun County!
