5 – Argrath Faces Evil

The Great Secret

Heort was the first to meet the Second Son, back in the Great Darkness when the world was destroyed. He followed the trail of the Second Son and learned the secret of the Star Heart. He experienced Everything, only to encounter that which is Outside of Everything. He confronted the Devil’s Face and refused to be devoured by the Void. He survived and recreated the world, distinguishing between the living and the dead. As a result, the Orlanthi call themselves Heortlings in his honor.
All Orlanthi experience at least part of this. Most get to the Second Son, who explains to them the things that lie beyond. Most people are content with that.
But some will have to go farther, and they will see, perhaps touch or (more rarely) even get their own Star Heart and place it into their breasts.
A rare individual sees the place where the Devil’s Face appears and most of them then retreat.
Some confront the Face and survive, emboldened and empowered far beyond normal humanity.
Survivors of the Void are rare, for it dissolves the soul of most who dare to look on it. A survivor of this would have his name added to the list of Second Son, Heort and Harmast. Such a survivor was Argrath.

Argrath and Arkat

Argrath means “Liberator” in the Heortling language. It is a corruption of “Arkat”, the name of an ancient hero who liberated the Heortlings from Gbaji the Deceiver and his Bright Empire more than a thousand years ago.

Das Große Geheimnis

Heort war der erste, der dem Zweiten Sohn begegnete, damals, in der Großen Dunkelheit, als die Welt vernichtet war. Er folgte dem Pfad des Zweiten Sohnes und lernte das Geheimnis des Sternenherzes. Er erlebte Alles, doch traf darauf hin auch auf das, welches Außerhalb von Allem liegt. Er konfrontierte das Teufelsgesicht und weigerte sich, von der Leere verschlungen zu werden. Er überlebte und baute die Welt neu und trennte die Lebenden von den Toten. Daher nennen die Orlanthi sich ihm zu Ehren Heortlinger.

Alle Orlanthi erleben zumindest einen Teil hiervon. Die meisten treffen auf den Zweiten Sohn, der ihnen erklärt, was im Jenseits liegt. Die meisten sind damit zufrieden.

Doch manche müssen weiterziehen, und manchmal sehen sie oder berühren sie oder, in sehr seltenen Fällen, erhalten sie ihr eigenes Sternenherz, welches sie dann in ihre Brust pflanzen.

Nur sehr wenige sehen den Ort, wo das Teufelsgesicht erscheint, und die meisten fliehen dann.

Die Wenigen, die das Gesicht konfrontieren und überleben, werden weitaus kühner und mächtiger als der Rest der Menschheit.
Überlebende der Leere sind selten, denn sie löst die Seele derer auf, die in sie blicken. Jemand der dies übersteht, würde seinen Namen der Liste des Zweiten Sohns hinzufügen, so wie Heort und Harmast. Argrath war einer dieser Überlebenden.

Argrath und Arkat

Argrath bedeutet in der Sprache der Heortlinger „Der Befreier“. Es ist eine Abwandlung von „Arkat“, dem Namen eines historischen Helden, der die Heortlinger von mehr als tausend Jahren von Gbaji dem Täuscher und seinem Strahlenden Imperium befreite.

Heort fut le premier à rencontrer Second Fils, au moment des Grandes Ténèbres, quand le monde était détruit. Il suivit le chemin de Second Fils et apprit le secret du Cœur d’Étoile. Il expérimenta Tout, seulement pour pouvoir trouver ce qui était En Dehors de Tout. Il affronta le Visage du Diable et refusa d’être dévoré par le Vide. Il survécut et recréa le monde, en faisant la distinction entre les vivants et les morts. Et c’est à cause de cela qu’en son honneur, les Orlanhtis s’appellent les Heortlings. Tous les Orlanthis en expérimentent au moins une partie durant leur initiation. La plupart arrivent jusqu’à Second Fils, qui leur explique les choses qu’il y a au-delà du bord du monde. La plupart de ceux-là s’en contentent.

Mais certains doivent aller plus loin, et ils veulent voir, et parfois toucher ou (plus rarement) obtenir leur Cœur d’Etoile et le placer dans leur poitrine.

Un individu d’exception apercevra en plus l’endroit où le Visage du Diable apparaît et la plupart s’enfuiront à ce moment-là. Quelques-uns affronteront le Visage et survivront, encouragés et rendus ainsi plus forts. Les survivants du Vide sont rares, car celui-ci dissout l’âme de la plupart de ceux qui osent le regarder. Un survivant du Vide aura son nom ajouté à la liste de Second Fils, Heort et Harmast. Argrath était un tel survivant.

Argrath et Arkat
