The foundations of the original city of Pavis was laid out by Lord Pavis himself around 830. The city as originally planned had two main areas, laid out in grids.
The first was the Main City, located between the King’s Villa and the river. This area covered about 200 hectares and was divided by four large paved roads. Smaller roads ran parallel to these or bisected them at right angles, forming a grid of rectangular city blocks, each with dimensions averaging about 150 meters long by 50 meters.
The second was a richer residential area located south of Temple Hill and covering about 65 hectares. The grid here was a network of mostly square blocks, each about 50 by 50 meters. The road network includes a few Y shaped junctions, for unknown purpose.
Several of the city’s hills were built up as well, including Temple Hill, the Real City (originally the Villa of Lord Pavis), Temple Hill, and Blind King’s Hill. These areas could not strictly follow a grid, as they needed to follow the contours of the hill. Most of the city’s temples were placed on Temple Hill, although a few were scattered around other settlements for unknown reasons.
On the left-side of the Zola Fel River, across from the Main City, was the Zebra Palace, home to the Arrowsmith Dynasty rulers. Near Griffin and Wyvern Gates, the grid system was modified to take into account the walls of the city.
After the fall of the city to Jaldon Goldentooth in 940, later rulers adapted and modified this grid system, although remnants of it can clearly be seen in the city ruins.
The grid is somewhat similar to that of other ancient grid cities such as Pella.
