The Lunar Religion in post-Liberation Prax

Posted on June 30, 2024

Following the liberation of Pavis by the White Bull, the Lunar Army was forced out of Prax, and all arrangements those dependent on the presence of the Lunar Army collapsed. The governor and his household fled back to Saird. The Seven Mothers temple in New Pavis was desecrated and given to the Eurmal cult as a shrine. So what is left?

In New Pavis, there are only a handful of Lunar initiates left. Most have the protection of a friendly cult such as Lhankor Mhy or Issaries.

In the Big Rubble, there are known to be several bands of survivors, now little better than outlaw bandits. They are thought to cooperate with less savory cults for their own survival. More on that in a moment.

In Pavis County, the Pelorian farmers who were settled on land that previously belonged to Sartarite settlers run the risk of being driven out of their farms by the displaced heirs.

In the Grantlands, those settlers who can defend their steads stay on, and likely pay protection money to local nomads. Others have fled, or effectively become new Oasis People.

Among the Praxians, there are still sizable Seven Mothers cults among the Sable Riders, and among the Impala or Morokanth. However, these factions are certainly less important than they were previously. The Sable Riders and Impala Riders are both led by strongly anti-Lunar tribal leaders (although the pro-Lunar faction of the Sable Riders still have nearly 4000 cultists).

In short, the Lunar allies in Prax are scattered and dispirited. Most have either died or fled Prax.

And yet, there are hints of coordinated action by Lunar supporters against the White Bull and his barbarian allies. Assassination attempts, ambushes, and spiritual attacks have all been made – some successful, others not. There are those who worry that the secretive Black Fang Brotherhood works for imperial paymasters (such rumors were common during the Lunar Occupation as well). Some even claim that recent activities in the Big Rubble by various Chaotic bands are coordinated.

From the perspective of Furthest, the best that can be hoped for is that this can keep the forces in Prax from linking up with Sartar. Prax has far less significance than the rest of Dragon Pass.

From the perspective of Glamour, this is all completely irrelevant compared to defeating the Pentan invasion in the eastern satrapies. Or defeating the White Moon peasant rebellion. It’s like Heraclius worrying about the fall of Cartagena to the Visigoths when he was trying to stop Khosrow from taking Constantinople.

It is unknown who is behind such coordination.
