Notes on Oakfed

Posted on September 24, 2022

Oakfed is a major spirit in Dragon Pass and Prax. In the Lesser and Greater Darkness, Oakfed ruled much of Prax, dispelling the Darkness but burning all the remnants of the ancient forests there and reducing them to ash.

Oakfed is often summoned in Prax and his wildfires rampage across the plains. Oakfed is also often summoned in Dragon Pass. During the Inhuman Occupation, Oakfed ran riot in the new forests that grew in Dragon Pass and broke the strength of the elves. Many shamans make spirit cults with him, and he allows his follows to Summon (and Dismiss) Fire Elementals of any size. He also provides Create Wildfire.

The Praxians often use Oakfed in their battles, whipping up wildfires to burn the dry grasslands and scrub. Others might dismiss the fire elementals, but the wildfires continue. They often use Oakfed when raiding Dragon Pass, but Orlanth has many techniques against the Wildfire, the easiest being Cloud Call plus Rain, but the most dangerous being when they change the direction of the wind and send the Wildfire back at its summoner! Nonetheless, Oakfed often appears in Sartar, the Verge, and Dagori Inkarth, and he is no stranger to Tarsh or the Grazelands. I’ve heard stories that his biggest appearance though were in the Elder Wilds, when he burned down the ancient elf forests that once covered Balazar.

A few years back I was driving across eastern Oregon on my way to Burning Man, and saw Oakfed for many hours. The sky was red and so choked with smoke I could barely breath. At night, I could see his red flames dancing in the mountains.

Is there a connection between Lightning Boy and Oakfed? Lightning Boy was originally a Fire Son captured by Air Demons during the War of the Gods and married into the hierarchy. He often appeared among men as a human with superhuman powers.
