Sunset in the Big Rubble is a fearful time. Long shadows fall over the ruins. Although there are some faint lights of lamps and fires in the Real City, Mani’s Fort, and Zebraside, and at the occasional camp, most of the Big Rubble is lit only by the Red Moon.
Broo are most active in the early morning, late afternoon, and early evening. It is thought that vampires walk through the Big Rubble at night, sometimes accompanied by zombie slaves. But the most feared area at night is the Troll Stronglands, for this is when the trolls are most active. Swarms of trollkin and insects crawl out from wherever they hide during the day, and cave trolls prowl for food. Dark trolls carry out their business, trading with each, offering sacrifices to their underworld gods, and seeking food.
Night is the most dangerous time to be anywhere near the Troll Stronglands. The trolls do not use light, as they do not need it, and so Trolltown is both dark and noisy with activity. A few fires are sometimes lit by the Zorak Zoran cult in Riverside, but those are to show their contempt for the gods of fire (and sometimes to roast their prisoners alive with). However, the troll patrols never use lights, and move surprisingly quietly.
Worse yet, the trolls can easily see the torches, lanterns, and fires of those traveling through Huntland. Those forced to camp in Huntland best extinguish their cooking fires and huddle in the darkness, less they attract the curiosity of a troll patrol numbering more than a dozen!
