Notes on Calyz, the Fire of Men

Posted on March 31, 2023

Teshnos is about 1800 km away from the Mirrorsea Bay, which takes some 7-10 days of sailing with good weather.

The most interesting of the Teshnite gods to me is Calyz, the Fire of Men, inventor of cooking, smelting, and sex. Calyz is beloved by the common folk of Tesnos and one of the most popular cults in Teshnos. He serves as a protective deity in many Teshnite households.

The cult of Calyz is much larger than that of Solf (Lodril) or Somash (Yelm), in fact, it is probably as large as the Grain Goddess cults. His “lowfire” priests are common throughout Teshnos. They do not hold the status of the other Fire Priests, but often wield great power.

Here’s where it gets really interesting. The son of Solf, the God Learners identified him with both Gustbran the Workfire and Mahome the Hearthfire.

Calyz provides such special Rune magic as Create Bonfire, Hearth Fire, Furnace Fire, Summon and Dismiss Small and Medium, Fire Elemental, and Suppress Oakfed. His cult is the biggest in Teshnos.

As an aside, several of the Lightbringers can be found in Teshnos. Chalana Arroy, Issaries, and Lhankor Mhy were all brought by the God Learners (if not before), although they are have local names as well. Issaries has been reinvigorated by interaction with the Kethaelans.

Now Calyz is a pretty complex deity compared to Gustbran and Mahome. He’s an inventor and crafter, crafty and clever, and also one who cares about ordinary mortals.

Furalor? the God Learners quite rightly identified Furalor with…. Oakfed (wild and also the Cremation Fire.)

So at 7-10 days away there is a lot of ship traffic between Teshnos (especially Melib) and Kethaela.
