Lunar Imperial Army standards

Posted on June 14, 2013

Here’s something that may or may not go into the Guide – a sketch of Lunar Imperial Army standards (I’ve not commissioned a final on this, although it is referenced in the picture showing Hofstaring’s surrender). One of several we have.

This was posted on Google+…

The primary purpose of ancient standards were not to be seen from a distance. They were for unit cohesion and morale, through tradition and sacred ritual. They were visual, yes, but not something that could easily be distinguished from another standard or seen from across the field. Here’s a good example of what I mean from the Victory Stele of Naram-Sin:

Now in Glorantha, these standards house the gods of the unit – that’s their primary purpose. You bring the Imperial Two-Star Standard to the field, because part of the Empire’s war magic resides in that standard, blessing the soldiers and inspiring fear and panic in the enemy.
