Subject: More missing Dailies… + Announcement (fwd)
Hail Gloranthaphiles, Ladies, Gentlemen, and Hermaphroditic Tapeworms!
By now you all should have seen Henk’s announcement of the end of the runequest-daily and the beginning of the glorantha-digest mailing list. I will be taking over the awfully mundane task of administering the glorantha mailing list using majordomo software (revision 1.92).
As with the RuneQuest Daily, the Glorantha Digest will be offered in digest format only. I do not plan at this time to offer it in a direct-reflecting form. The reason for this is that direct-reflecting mailing lists promote the quick exchange of shallow information over the slower exchange of more carefully written material. That is not what I want, and I think our esteemed guests agree.
Now for some questions that everybody will want to have answered quickly.
WHO IS THIS LOREN MILLER GUY?
My relevant background is as follows: I started playing RQ with RQ2 in 1981, and joined Andrew Bell’s RQ Digest some time around 1988. At the same time I started the GRASS mailing list and the GRASS-SERVER (which was the official archive site for the RQ Digest back before Shannon Appel started the soda ftp site, same with the old time Mythos-Delvers List). GRASS stood for Generic Religions and Secret Societies, and was intended as a thinktank for folks who wanted to write up real religions in terms that would be useful in any game. It was heavily influenced by the CoP cult writeups. Though GRASS has died since then, I’ve been running the rq-playtest mailing list for several years, ever since I heard that the gang of three/four/five was working on RQ4. I must enjoy running mailing lists, for I do a lot of it. Right now, in addition to the Glorantha Digest, I run the RuneQuest Rules mailing list (rq-rules-digest@hops.wharton.upenn.edu), a mailing list for Campaign and Setting Design
(world-design-digest@hops.wharton.upenn.edu), and a number of internal work mailing lists (I ain’t telling their names).
WHAT BELONGS HERE?
The Glorantha Digest will carry on the tradition established by Andrew Bell’s RuneQuest Digest and Henk Langeveld’s RuneQuest Daily, in that it will continue to be the place for information about Glorantha and discussion of all things Gloranthan.
WHAT DOESN’T BELONG HERE?
The Glorantha Digest is not intended for RuneQuest discussion except in the setting of Glorantha. If you want to discuss RuneQuest rules, from variant rules to house rules to rules questions (other than Glorantha-specific ones) then the best place to discuss them is the RuneQuest-Rules mailing list, also at this host. To subscribe, send electronic mail to majordomo@hops.wharton.upenn.edu with “subscribe rq-rules-digest” in the body of the message. This is for the digested mailing list. If you want the direct-reflecting mailing list say
“subscribe rq-rules” instead.
WHAT ABOUT MAGIC SYSTEMS? ARE THEY GLORANTHAN OR RULES ISSUES?
Good question. I don’t have any easy answers, only suggestions. Look at your rules. Do they involve Runes and Rune-metals and all sorts of Glorantha-specific information? Then they are Gloranthan. Do they involve a view of alternate realities based more on earth tradition than on Gloranthan cosmology? Then they are not Gloranthan, and should go to the RuneQuest rules mailing list. Do they involve a lot of numbers? Then they almost certainly should go to the RuneQuest Rules mailing list.
WHAT ABOUT DRAGON PASS, NOMAD GODS, WARHAMSTER, ETC? Grey area again. Use your best judgement.
WHAT ABOUT RUNEQUEST/TEKUMEL AND RQ IN OTHER CAMPAIGN SETTINGS? Definitely a RuneQuest topic.
HOW DO I USE THE GLORANTHA-DIGEST?
In the future, rather than sending your email to runequest@glorantha.holland.sun.com please send your email to glorantha@hops.wharton.upenn.edu, or simply reply to a digest. I apologize for not giving the host a glorantha-based name, but I chose a beery name instead, for beer must come first. 😉
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE SPECIAL ISSUES OF THE RUNEQUEST DIGEST?
Good question, and one that we haven’t really addressed. Suggestions will be appreciated, as Henk and I need to iron this one out. In any case, whether the mailing list is based off my host or his, he plans to continue as editor so long as he has the time for it.
