Cult sizes in New Pavis

Posted on January 20, 2024

As an aside, there are about 400 initiates of Pavis, and 7 Rune Priests (Daughters of Pavis). There might be as many as 2000 lay members on top of this. Now that gets us the full range of the cult.

In comparison, there are 4700 initiates of Orlanth in Pavis County, and another 7000 or so associates and lay members. Even just counting those within New Pavis itself, there are 700 initiates of Orlanth and another 2000 lay members and associates.

Pavis is the patron of both the Big Rubble and Pavis-WIthin-the-Walls. But even within the walls, Orlanth is as important a cult. And outside the walls, he is far more important.

To put this in context, there are about 300 initiates of Black Fang and an unknown (but small) number of shaman-priests. And no lay members.

There was a plan in 1621 to “marry” Pavis to a Red Goddess priestess, and thereby bring Pavis into the Lunar pantheon (and make him associated with the Red Goddess). That plan fell apart after the Cradle came down the River of Cradles – several important pro-Lunar figures in New Pavis ended up switching sides, and politically it collapsed.

After Sor-eel left New Pavis the next year, so did any talk of marrying Pavis into the Lunar pantheon.

I assume this method was used by the Lunars with other local gods? This was done with the patron deities of the Tripolis, of Mirin’s Cross, and a few other cities and tribes. As long as it is locally maintained it lasts.
