This is a campaign being run via Roll20 & Skype, based out of the UK with a heavy USA presence. I will update the post with the sessions, but you can find it here: http://icastintegervalue.wordpress.com/2014/04/28/runequest-6-rise-of-a-clan-table-of-contents/

    Session One:

    RuneQuest 6 – Rise of a Clan – Session 1

Table of Contents | Next Session ->

I decided to start to chronicle my gameplay sessions, in order to remember what the hell actually happened and also to give /r/gametales a little bit of something to read.

Just so you know, we do have more space in the game on Roll20.

A quick introduction of players and characters for this session:

(int) magicMissile (Robert) – GM and all around amazing guy. I am beautiful.

Ashkai (Liam) – Odaylan hunter. Doesn’t talk much. Stole the name from me. New to Glorantha.

Seth Ellis (Gareth) – Eurmal worshipper and general dick. New to Glorantha.

Quillian (Grant) – Humakti warrior. Borderline suicidal in the risks he takes. Experienced in Glorantha.

Ubrecht the Knower (Brian) – Lhankor Mhy knowledgeman. Got a beard. VERY experienced in Glorantha, and has in fact made some stuff for it (I’ll link at bottom).

The Clan – 50 people, about 5 of which are weaponthanes. 20 children. 200 cattle, including 30 oxen of breeding age. 100 cattle worth of goods.

I should note that I take the whole “Make Glorantha your own” thing very seriously, and this has resulted in me making some minor changes to Glorantha itself. Primarily, Dragon Pass is completely unsettled, the Lunar Empire has only just conquered Tarsh and Sartar doesn’t exist. I felt these things would make a more compelling play.

Current map for players (annotation added by me):

The session opens with the players being told that the Lunar Empire has invaded Tarsh and that the clans they were from have submitted to the Lunars without a fight. The players were the ones that wanted to fight the Lunars, but were told it would come to civil war within the clan itself if they tried to push the situation.

Instead of committing kinstrife, the players have decided to move to Dragon Pass and settle a new clan there. They saw other groups of Orlanthi in the distance doing the same thing.

I started them off towards the centre of Dragon Pass, simply because it seemed to make the most sense to me. They decided their location from about 14 possible homestead locations, after asking some questions about several of them (although, I should note, they didn’t ask as many as I thought they were going to).

They are in a light wooded area next to a river flowing to the south. After some discussion, they decide they’re going to take a few carls with them and track ahead, whilst telling the convoy to build a raft to put the children and elderly on so it can move faster.

They then proceed to follow the river to the south, watching out for anyone or anything. I tell them they find nothing but deer tracks, although there are humanoid foot prints (if a bit distorted) in the water by the river.

Quillian’s Player: Two legged deer? BROOS!

The first night they settle shifts for watch. The first shift was Ashkai and two carls, the second shift was Seth and two carls and the third was Quillian, Ubrecht and a cattleherder.

Quillian’s Player: The ugly Americans are on the third shift.

First shift was relatively relaxed, although Ashkai heard some ducks quacking in the water and considered it odd that waterfowl would be out this late.

Second shift was less relaxed. Seth heard something moving in the water and ran out to see what it was, only to find a trail of ripples in the water heading off to the south.

Third shift, at this point, were ridiculously paranoid. They heard something moving in the woods and were combat ready almost immediately. They saw a shadowed figure standing there in the moonlight and Ubrecht used his sling to throw a stone at it. It missed and skittered off into the woods, although they heard a noise they thought might be a rabbit dying.

The figure charged them, coming barely into light of the campfire. A massive, beautiful stag. Huge antlers and a lovely coat.

Quillian: Is it a white stag?

The stag stopped, stared at them for a moment and ran off into the woods.

The rest of the shift passed peacefully, and they woke up the rest of the team.

Ubrecht: Some weird things went down last night. A stag came and then ran off. Ashkai: It’s pretty normal for a stag to want to defend it’s territory.

During the second day, they reach a ford across a smaller stream. It shows signs of people being here before, as the ford has been supported by felled trees.

The rest of the day passes quickly and, as they follow the river around, they come to a swamp. The day is beginning to come to a close, but the players decide that they do not want to camp in the swamp during the night (a surprisingly wise move).

The shifts are the same as the first night. Ashkai spots an odd blue light off in the woods, but thinks it might either be marshlight or some sort of a glowing mushroom – even though it’s moving.

On the second shift, Seth takes one of the cattleherds he’s with and sets off in search of this blue light. When he gets closer, there is a sudden very oppressive atmosphere and he can see it’s some sort of a humanoid shape. It turns to them, and it looks like a translucent blue person.

He starts running away, only to turn around and see that the cattleherd he was with is frozen in terror. As he watches, the spirit reaches the cattleherd, seems to grow claws and runs them through the cattleherd. He collapses and Seth runs away in fear.

As he reaches the edge of the swamp, the feeling of oppression drops away and so he turns around to observe, only to find himself face to face with the spirit. It flies (in terms of speed, not direction) off into the swamp, and seems to take up it’s movement again.

    Seth wakes the next watch.

Seth: Th-th-there’s something wrong in the swamp. A spirit or something. BOB IS DEAD. Quillian: Undead?! Where?! I want to kill.

Quillian is seriously considering going off into the swamp but, before he can, they see a humanoid figure on the horizon. As it comes closer, they can see that it’s Bob and that there doesn’t really seem to be do anything wrong with him (although his eyes look dead and his face is hollowed out). He just trudges past them and settles into his sleeping place.

Ubrecht: He seems empty. It seems like something has been taken from him.

Ubrecht’s player has to go at this point, so they send him and a cattleherd off to the village in order to tell them not to try crossing the swamp at night and that they’ve went to the east.

The rest of the shift passes unexceptionally and, as the sun rises, the blue light in the distance seems to fade. The party trudges through the swamp towards smoke they spotted in the east.

They find a village with buildings steadily producing smoke, and oddly short people walking around it.

Quillian: Chaos worshippers? Why else would they be so short. Seth: I’ll go talk to them, we’ll see what’s going on.

Seth walks to the village only to find them waiting for him. They’re durulz (duck folk)!

Ashkai’s Player: Holy shit, they’re all Howard the Duck.

Seth convinces the River Duck leader (Malavar) to give them help going through the swamp. He tried to convince him to do it in exchange for them eliminating the necromancer Delecti, but he just got laughed at and was told they’d do it in exchange for a favour.

Quillian was unamused when Seth told him the terms of this deal (he hates ALL non-humans), but the clan was oathbound and – as a worshipper of Humakt – wasn’t willing to break the oath.

They were offered hospitality within the duck village, and everyone except Quillian partook of it. The ducks were decidedly unamused by this, but weren’t willing to break the deal by doing anything. Quillian decided to make the most of the time by exploring around the outside of the village and everyone else is resting and eating vegetables.

So this is where we end the first session. Quillian is having a wander, whilst Seth, Ashkai and four cattleherds enjoy River Duck hospitality.
