I have a looming problem. One of my players intends to play a Kolating (that’s great), and I know that the he’ll be making charms for the other players (that’s great).

However, the rules for charm taboos are somewhat unclear when dealing with these gifted charms.

Namely, the third paragraph under taboos: “The Game Master now treats your highest-rated Spirit Rune breakout ability (or the Spirit Rune itself if you have no breakout abilities) as a flaw.”

If a charm is gifted to another player, clearly the new owner would be expected to obey the charm’s taboo. However, it is not guaranteed that the new owner would even possess the spirit rune.

My guess is that the taboo would be rated at the spirit rune rating of the creator.

Hi, i’ll check the text later to see if the relevant part is missing. In the meantime gifted charms work so:

    • They are standalone starting at 13 unless the hero has the spirit rune.
    • The taboo is at the value of the charm.
    • The taboo is created by the player in cooperation with the other player and GM per the rules.
    • The charm is actually made with the hero present. The old idea of the shaman with a bag of charms for sale doesn’t really exist now. The shaman has the materials to hand and can get a spirit easily to put in it. He also negotiates between the hero and the spirit its needs – the taboo. It’s actually a mini ritual.

I’m not this far into the rules yet, but this part sounds especially cool. (And I love the idea of dumping the “Shaman Salesman” part!)

Although it doesn’t actually say so, I think that the taboo of a stand-alone charm would be at the same rating as the stand-alone ability.

    Thank you!
