To be honest, I expect a lot of the music in central and western Genertela sounds a lot like this:

    http://youtu.be/IjAYp39eEEs
    (tympanum or frame drum)

    http://youtu.be/xR8oilChdk0
    (lyre)

    http://www.oeaw.ac.at/kal/agm/
    (aulos)

LOL i found these before finding my above find but ignored them as I thought they’d get knocked for being the wrong type. I put a search for ancient Greek music.

And for what it is worth, I don’t think Orlanthi and Dara Happan music styles are so radically different that we moderns could easily distinguish them. They use a lot of the same instruments and have many centuries of cross-pollination. Possibly it is easiest to think of it as a scale, with Rinliddi at one end and Esrolia at the other end.

Not at all. The aristocracy prefers harp based music like this:

    Or

But the common folk have music with the same instruments (more or less) as the hill tribes (although different songs, different compositions, different instruments given importance).

Then again, harp musicians are probably patronized by many Orlanthi hill kings in Peloria, who look to Dara Happa for the look and trappings of power (even if they utterly reject its ideological underpinnings).

I’m pretty sure the Fine Fellows at Gimpy’s the other night were playing this rousing Orlanthi tune:

    Of course, YGMV.

For what it is worth, I think Orlanthi music is a combination of woodwind instruments, drums, string instruments, with some vocalization (but probably not like what we are used to). I imagine something a lot more like:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SB9ZZ5V1DX8

I suspect with the Orlanthi, skaldic poetry is sung and accompanied with music. So the recital of deeds of the House of Sartar might sound much like this: http://www.oeaw.ac.at/kal/sh/demodokos.mp3

Religious hymns are chanted at every festival – they might well sound more like Vedic chants:

As for the horns the Orlanthi use in battle, to intimidate opponents and mark position, they probably sound like this:

If you mix all of that together, you might have something like what you’d hear in Dragon Pass.

I’ve always thought that the Orlanth might play bronze age Lurs – like the Revheim ones:
    http://abel.hive.no/trompet/lur/bronze/revheim/
    http://abel.hive.no/trompet/lur/bronze/
(well worth going to Norway to see them)
Wooden Lurs are also called herding horns in Scandanavia, which brings me on to

Musica Sveciae No. 8: Lockrop & Vallåtar – Ancient Swedish Pastoral Music (if you can find a copy. For those of you that I see at cons, i’ll bring it with me so you can all appreciate it.).

I think it’s very evocative of Orlanthi pastoralists – like this Kulning:

For the hero quest in the Gloranthan freeform/LARP, I used some Afro-Celt Sound System to introduce the seven mothers.

Hmmm, I was given a cassette tape of “Authentic Viking Music” when I was younger. All I can say is that music has come a long way since then …

There is a Similar thread at RPG.NET which has some interesting music from around the world.
